The Media!!! Oh my!!

Welcome to my last blog post!

We're gonna discuss a highly debated topic as of late, the media!

This chart is taken from the American Press Institute and the data represented shows the percentage that Democrats, Independents, and Republicans trust their media.

This first pattern that I notice right away is that Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike all value the media they use most often compared to the "news media" in general.  When asked if they thought the "news media" was moral, only 41% of Democrats, 15% of Independents, and 14% of Republicans agreed with the statement. That's a stark difference from when they were asked the same question, but in relation to the media that they use most often. The percentage of Democrats who agreed with the statement grew by 18%, Independents grew by 29%, and Republicans grew by 43%. This shows me that parties tend to trust their personal sources of media over the general "news media".

This is seemingly similar to the previous pattern, but Republicans generally trust the "news media" significantly less than Democrats. The percentages between the trust Democrats have for "news media" compared to the media they use most often can practically be counted on your fingers. When asked if the "news media" protected democracy, 52% of Democrats agreed with the statement while only 18% of Republicans agreed. When asked the same question in relation to the media they use most often, Democrats grew by only 5%, that's not that big of a difference! Especially compared to Republicans who grew by 28%! This shows me that Republicans have far more trust in the media they use most often compared to "news media". Democrats while there is more trust for the media they use most often, it is not a huge change. I think it would be safe to assume that the "news media" and the media they use most often... could possibly be closely related?

Oh wait, it is!

This chart shows us different news outlets and where they land along the political spectrum, taken from the Pew Research Center.

The first thing you might notice is that there are a lot more news options on the left of the chart than the right. Not only that, but not all the options on the left are super liberal. There's a range you can choose from whether you want something less liberal and more intermediate like the Wall Street Journal or something more liberal like the New Yorker Slate. On the other hand, there are a lot more far right options then there are news sources that are closer to being intermediate. Fox News, is known to have a right-wing bias, but that's nothing compared to the Glenn Beck Program or Breitbart located even farther right. Due to the limited media options that are given to Republicans, I think it's easier for them to assume the "news media" is liberal media because there are more media options for Liberals or Moderates.

Political Typology: Who Am I?

Hey! My name is Usha and I'm just a high schooler learning about the government! Recently I took a political typology quiz which told me where I stood on the political spectrum. You can take this quiz and find out where you stand as well. The quiz asked me questions that helped narrow down my values and ultimately placed me in the category of an Opportunity Democrat. The test defines this group as " financially comfortable... liberal attitudes on most issues including the environment, immigration and homosexuality... strong belief that hard work is enough for most people to get ahead and for being somewhat less likely to see structural barriers facing blacks and women... supportive of U.S. engagement abroad and involvement in global markets "  I have pretty different political beliefs compared to core conservatives, who are on the opposite side of the spectrum.  Core conservatives are more traditional Republicans, supporting smaller g...

Interest(ing) Groups ;p

Hey again,  Today we're talking about interest groups! Interest groups are essentially groups of people that share a common interest and try to appeal to the government in order to pass legislation in their favor. There are many ways that interest groups do this, but two of the biggest ways is by giving money to politicians and by drafting bills that Congress can enact into law.  One interest group that I researched is the NARAL ( www.prochoiceamerica.org/ ).  This group participates in political action and advocacy efforts to combat restrictions on abortion.  I took this screenshot from the abortion access page that reveals their point of view and purpose.  I think that it is pretty clear to see that NARAL has a liberal perspective. It is well known that liberals gener ally support pro-choice abortion rights meaning that they believe women should have the right to get an abortion. The line, "anti-choice politicians and organizatio...
